Have you noticed the beautiful olive trees that seem to be the rage right now in home decor? Whether real or faux olive trees, I’ve been drooling over them for awhile. When shopping at Home Goods a few weeks ago, I spied this gorgeous wood pot, and knew right away that I must DIY a faux olive tree. A real one would be wonderful, but I would surely kill it. Besides, I couldn’t do a real one in this wood pot because watering would ruin it. It was so quick and easy to make-it only took about an hour. Just follow these quick and easy directions to make your own DIY faux olive tree!

Materials Needed:
~Pot or container
~Tree branch proportionately sized for your pot
~Styrofoam
~Faux Olive tree branches
~Green or brown floral tape
~Hot glue, Gorilla glue, or other strong glue
Optional Materials:
~Quikrete, soil, or old towel to affix around the branch in pot
~Craft paint the color of the branch to paint over floral tape
~Moss to put on top if you use an old towel or Quikrete

Directions:
- Glue the styrofoam to the inside of the pot with hot glue or other strong glue. Be sure that the styrofoam is securely affixed to the inside of the pot and does not move at all when the glue dries.

2. If there is a side of the branch that looks better than the other side, make sure that this is the side that you are using. (I forgot to do that and ended up making the whole tree backwards to how I wanted it to face!) Wrap the faux olive leaf branches with floral tape along the real tree branch where you think it looks most natural. You may want to pull up a few pics of real olive trees, or faux olive trees, that you like to mimic the look. You can also cut the leaves off individually and glue them onto the real tree branch. (I did not use that method.)

3. If desired, paint over the floral tape to match the tree branch. I just used a brown and gray craft paint that I already had and mixed the two colors together to match the branch.

4. If everything looks the way you want it, and the paint is dry, stick your branch into the styrofoam that you glued to the inside of the pot.

5. Wrap the tree trunk with an old towel, or mix some Quickrete, or in my case use what you have-which was batting to secure the trunk. You could also fill the whole pot with soil. I used the batting because I wanted the pot to be lighter if I wanted to move it. Top with soil or moss to finish it off for a more natural look.
That’s it!!! That’s all there is to make this quick and easy DIY faux olive tree! The great thing about making your own is that it saves a ton of money, you can customize the size to whatever size you’d like, and use any pot or container that suits your decor. My faux olive tree is about six feet tall, and it would’ve cost me well over $200 to purchase a tree this size. The pot was $30 (which I would’ve never spent that much on a pot, except I had a gift card) and the faux olive leaf branch was $15. Everything else I had around the house, so my total cost was $45. Much better than $200 plus!!!

They are quite the rage right now aren’t they! You did an amazing job Danielle!🥰
Thanks so much, my friend! They sure are! I just can’t bring myself to pay for one though!
That was a great idea to use actual soil to fill the pot with. That is such an easy way to give the tree a more real look and feel!
Thank you! I actually took it apart after a few months and used the olive branches for other things. Nothing stays the same around here!
