Why Christmas Tree Collars Are the Christmas Decoration You Didn’t Know You Needed!

Last year, I was in the store, and snapped a picture of the cutest hammered metal Christmas tree collar, and showed it in my Instagram stories. My inbox filled up with questions. I had no idea how much discussion that little story would spark! So I put together this guide, All About Christmas Tree Collars-Why Christmas Tree Collars Are the Christmas Decoration You Didn’t Know You Needed!
1) What are Christmas tree collars?
Christmas tree collars are an accessory to go around the tree, hide the stand and base of the tree, and replace tree skirts.
2) Do they hold water?
No, they do not hold water. Use the stand that you normally use for a real tree and put the water in it. The collar goes around the stand.
3) Do tree collars fit all trees?
They should. Round tree collars range from about 21″ in diameter to 27″ in diameter, and between 9″ and 11″ in height. If you have a very small, slim tree, you might want to consider purchasing a smaller collar, and if you have a very large, full tree, a bigger collar. But I have seen all sized tree collars on all sized trees, and you just about can’t go wrong!
4) Will they work for real or artificial trees?
Both! The collar surrounds the tree stand and the base of the tree-both real or fake trees just stand inside the collar.
5) Will it prevent pets from getting in the tree?

It might! I supposed a very clever and limber animal could squeeze in the top, but I bet it would deter most!
6) What are the advantages of a tree collar?
Tree collars are like a new accessory to an old outfit! They add a fresh look to your tree. Tree skirts seem to attract pine needles, dust, pet hair, glitter, and flocking. And have you ever seen a washable tree skirt? I’m not sure I have. Pets always seem to think a tree skirt is a blanket to lay on and mine was always covered in dog hair. Tree collars stay MUCH cleaner than a tree skirt. Dust, pet hair, glitter, and flocking don’t stick to it, and if anything does get on it, it can be wiped down easily!

Oh my you found so many great options! I bought a tree collar last year at end of season sales. I was on the fence, but your post is inspiring me to give it a try this year!
Thank you! Oh you should try it! You already bought it! Tree collars are so much easier to keep clean than a tree skirt, and it’s a fresh and updated look!
I really like the look of a Christmas tree collar but I’ve yet to purchase one. This year may be the year that I do so!
I hope you do, Paula! Post it if you do so I can see which one you chose!
Very good post! I have been considering buying one and this has inspired me to do so! You have shown us so many options, too! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much, Kim! They are like a new pair of shoes for the tree! Such fun options!
Love these ideas!!!! I have been eyeing a tree collars for a year or two now! Maybe I will go ahead and ‘retire’ my tree blanket this year. Thanks for so many beautiful ideas
I hope you get one! If you do, post it so I can see which one you pick! That’s the hardest part about tree collars-just picking one!
This is such a great post, thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much, Josiah! I appreciate you reading it!
I love so many of these! I always like wicker, but that hammer one is catching my eye too!!! Great post. thx
I like wicker too, but this is the first time I have seen the hammered metal ones, and they are pretty spectacular! Thanks, Tana!
Oooh! I love the wicker ones. Thanks for sharing this.
The wicker ones are my favorite, too, I think! It’s hard to choose! Thanks for reading!
This is such a smart space saving idea, I never have enough space for my tree. Plus these collars really add such a fun updated look to the traditional look of a Christmas tree!
Yes! They are especially space saving if you get the ones that fold up! Thanks, Heidi!
I’ve seen these around and wondered how to use these – thank you for giving me the answers! They do look wonderful though – I like the wicker ones the best as well.
I’m so glad! I think the wicker ones are the favorites so far! Thanks for reading!
Great post, Danielle. the woven basket you chose for your tree is so beautiful!
Thank you, Lori! This is actually my friend’s tree, and she bought her tree collar at Crate and Barrel. I think I linked it in the post. I just picked up one at Walmart for $20 that looks almost identical! I think it is linked as well.
I’m really looking forward to decorating this year! I love the look of a tree collar too.
So am I, Jennifer! Christmas decorating is always so fun!
Love this!!! you’re correct, I had no idea I needed this, but I believe I do, Danielle! 🙂
Haha! Aren’t they fabulous, Misty! Thanks for reading!
Ive been wanting one a couple years now! I think this year I just might bite the bullet and get one! Love all your options! Great info Danielle!
Oh you should, Esther! I think the thing that I like about them most is that they don’t get covered in dust and glitter and needles and pet hair like a tree skirt does.
So many great options! I think I need that wicker one from Magnolia Home! Thanks for all the information too:)
Thanks so much, Kelly! That one seems to be everyone’s favorite!
Love so many of these!
Thanks so much, Linda! It’s so hard to choose a favorite!
What size would I need? My tree is only 4 and a half tall. I have to sit it on a table.
Thanks so much
Christmas tree collars are universal in size, but since your tree is only 4 feet, the collar might look disproportional. You might want to buy one to try, and you can always return.
I have 12’ tree and the stand for it is 40 inches across. Have you seen any stands this size
Wow! That is a very large tree!!! Unfortunately, the biggest I’ve seen is 27″.
I like tree collars and I have a vintage looking galvanized one but I would also love to have a wooden box one or my favorite would be to have a croc big enough but I could put a tree in, my friend has one that just sits in her backyard I’ve been trying to convince her that she should let me have it!😂 (Sorry about all the lowercase capitals, I have no idea why my keyboard is acting up lol)
Even weirder is the fact that as I’m typing this and my keyboard looks normal, it’s showing no capitalization but when I submitted the comments it look normal! So strange 😂
So strange, Dee! I’m so sorry! It’s coming through correctly on my end!
I love the wooden box ones, too! Most of them fold flat for storing, which is great! I agree, your friend should let you borrow the crock! Haha!
