I visited my best friend last month, and for the first time, had the chance to stay in her beautiful new guest room. Her daughter recently moved out, and she converted her daughter’s bedroom to a guest room. An empty nester’s dream if you ask me! Or at least my dream (haha) as I still have 3 kids at home and every bedroom is spoken for. My friend thought of every gorgeous detail that you could ever want as a guest, and I thought I’d pass these fabulous essentials to a guest room on to you!
1) A comfy bed
The most important element to a fabulous guest bedroom is a comfortable bed. There is nothing worse than traveling and sleeping on a horrible bed. Ideally, the bed should be at least a queen size in case you have couples visitors. Most people probably put an older and no longer used bed in a guest room, and that’s OK as long as it’s still comfortable. A good topper and mattress pad can do wonders to an old bed! Good sheets are also important! They should be new, or new-ish and not thread barren, soft and not itchy, and definitely washed first if they are brand new. These are the sheets I slept on there, and they were wonderful! (I’m very sheet picky!)
Once you have the mattress covered and comfortable, and a good set of sheets, now comes the fun part of accessorizing the bed with a comforter or duvet set and pillows. Whether you chose a duvet or comforter set is a personal preference, but it should be hypo allergenic (especially if using a down insert!). Consider purchasing a machine washable set that will fit in your washing machine so that you don’t have to send it to the costly dry-cleaners. Also, be sure that you have a light coverlet or bedspread for those who get hot, and a heavier comforter or blanket for those who get cold.

2) Clothes Storage

While not everyone may be able to provide an empty dresser for their guests, a drawer or two is always nice, and at the very least, room in a closet to hang clothes is always desirable.

3) A bedside table and lamp
A bedside table and lamp are a must in my book! Guests often enjoy reading when they are away, and a lamp is more convenient that getting up and turning off and on the overhead light switch. Besides, when it’s dark in an unfamiliar place, a light switch can be hard to find. A table should be appointed with a lamp, a water bottle or carafe, and space for guests to put their cellphone and anything else they need at night. Alarm clocks are no longer needed as everyone has a phone that can be used for the time and alarm. You might want to consider removing yours to clear off more space. A few free outlets close to the bed for phone and device charging are really important! Here is a multi-plug that also has 4 USB charging ports.

4) A chair
A chair for putting on shoes, sitting to read, or hanging clothes on is not a necessity, but a nice feature to have.

5) A tray or basket
A tray or basket is so useful in a guest room to corral guest’s personal belongings such as rings, watches, lotions or cosmetics. It’s also a great place to display the WIFI password, put a box of Kleenex, snacks, and water bottles.

6) WIFI Password
Be sure that the WIFI password is simply and easily displayed in the guest room. How awkward is it when visiting someone to have to ask for the WIFI! Just avoid the awkwardness altogether and put it in there.

7) Hooks and a robe
Hooks are always a great idea for a purse or bag. A robe is not necessary, but so luxurious! As a guest in a nice hotel, or in this case my bff’s home, I always appreciate a robe!
